I have always been enticed by the idea of a beauty subscription box, however have always struggled to find the perfect one – there are so many on the market! I finally did just bite the bullet and signed up for Birchbox after hearing endless good reviews (It’s the UK’s #1 beauty box!).
Birchbox is a monthly subscription service that delivers personalised beauty items that range from makeup, skincare, body care, haircare, and even nail care! It really is the perfect all rounder. I must say – I have thoroughly enjoyed my first month! In this blog post, I will be unboxing the January Birchbox 2020 with you all, and showing you what comes inside!
For January, Birchbox partnered with Rochelle Humes to create the Just the way you are box, focused on natural beauty that celebrates individuality. It comes with 5 different products, 2 full size and the rest are travel size. The overall value for the box is £54.45, and you get the box for just £12.95! Let’s have a look at what’s inside, shall we?
Mélusine Jade Roller. RRP £15.50
I couldn’t have thought of a better item to put into a self-care box than a jade roller! If you don’t know the benefits of using a jade roller on your skin, it is primarily great for reducing puffiness in the morning. Used over a long period of time, the jade roller can also help with improving elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles! Prevention is key, kids.
When using a jade roller, it’s best to roll starting from the centre of the face, and out towards the perimeters. I know lots of people who like to sit there for hours massaging their skin in particular directions to help with sagging too – Hey, whatever feels good, right? Keeping your jade roller in the fridge will give you the ultimate refreshment in the morning. Thank me later. It feels amazing to use a jade roller on top of a sheet mask too, to help the essences penetrate further into the skin!
Greenfrog Botanic Argan Oil Body Lotion. RRP £9.95 for the full size
This body lotion is formulated with 85% natural ingredients, blending sweet-smelling argan oil and moisture boosting glycerin together, to create a super moisturising lotion. Birchbox has given us a 50ml bottle here, making this the perfect handbag essential. This lotion claims to hydrate skin for 48 hours, but the best part about it is the fact that it sinks right into the skin immediately, and doesn’t leave your body feeling sticky. The consistency isn’t too thick either, making it super spreadable! The bottle is also 100% recyclable, which is amazing because in 2020 we all should be doing our part to help the environment!
I do not tend to particularly enjoy ‘clean’ creams and lotions, as I find that too much of the time, they overcompensate on the scents to cover up (I assume) the smell of the natural ingredients. This lotion smells like vanilla cupcakes to me, like many other clean beauty body lotions and creams do. But, imagine 7000 vanilla cupcakes. I can’t stand how strong the scent is, and for that reason, I don’t think I will get that much use out of it. I will keep it in my handbag though, for those dry hand emergencies!
The Beauty Crop Glow Milk in Peer Pressure. RRP £15 for the full size
This is one product that I already knew was going to be in the box. Birchbox reached out to all subscribers to pick a shade from a selection of three, and I chose the shade peer pressure. This particular shade is a gorgeous golden, pinky tone, but it isn’t too warm – so it would suit lots of different skin colours across the spectrum! It reminds me of Mac’s soft and gentle.
This liquid highlighter is cruelty free, paraben free, mineral-oil free, and vegan too! It promises maximum glow with minimal effort. Enriched with coconut and argan oils, the formula is super hydrating and looks dewy on the skin – not shimmery or sparkly. I love using this product beneath my foundations or BB creams to add a lit-from-within glow to any look. This is a seriously gorgeous product, and the packaging is adorable, at just 5ml!
Eyeko Black Magic Mascara. RRP £10 for the full size
I had this product in my ASOS basket, and then I opened this Birchbox! I am so excited to try it, as I constantly see people using it or hear people raving about it. This mascara claims to ‘transform your lashes’, and the thing that made me want it so badly was the curved, sickle-shaped wand, that is so similar to Maybelline lash sensational’s wand! I love these shapes because I find that they fit the eye great, so you can really get to the root of the lash. The lash sensational mascara is great, if you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend you do. It tends to flake on me sometimes though, which is why I am on the hunt for a new one.
What’s more, this mascara is paraben free, and is infused with keratin and shea butter to strengthen and condition your lashes. It is water resistant (so it will hold a curl for much, much longer than your average mascara!) and it claims to last for 12 hours.
Oh K! Bubble Sheet Mask. RRP £4
If you listen carefully, you can hear me squealing for joy right now: Korean skincare!
Koreans are so far ahead of the game when it comes to skincare, they make our western skincare look lightyears behind… this innovative mask is essentially just a sheet mask that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form tiny little bubbles. It isn’t just super fun, but it also purifies the skin for a radiant and healthy complexion. Don’t forget to rinse this off with some water after 10 minutes to reveal your revived skin! I can’t wait to try this!
February sneak peek…
At the back of the Birchbox booklet that details the products within the box, is the February sneak peak! Spoiler alert – look away if you don’t want to know…
Overall, I am pleased with my first Birchbox box! I think there is a good variety of products ranging from body care, makeup, and skincare, that are super useful for this time of year. I can’t wait for the next box already!
